I got the domain names!

Well, I finally got a few pay checks in and so I was able to purchase the domains I wanted for this blog.  It is no longer necessary to remember “snorkel.techism.com”.   I now have three shiny new domains that anyone can remember!

I can not express my extreme good fortune in being able to obtain a domain name with the name “joe” in it, much less one that is under 10 letters and doesn’t require me spelling it o-u-t every time I mention it.  You wouldn’t beleive how rare it is to find one like that.

Or maybe you would…

It’s rare.

Now I feel comfortable going with some cards, and maybe getting my own custom design applied to this beast as I move forward.  At least I can tell the folks at the dive shops, surf shops, and outfitters around town where to see pics of Ballard that look like Hawaii, taken by a guy with a mask, snorkel, and little else.

Well, with the new domain names in place, all that’s left is for me to make use of the weekend ahead to get some good content for these pages.

Oh yeah, I am also pleased to announce that I have finally appeared on Google’s results for Snorkel Seattle and Seattle Snorkel.  I’m at the bottom right now – but it’s a good start!

I'm like 20th place or something, lol.

Great site! I also recently returned from a Hawaii snorkel trip and started wondering about the possibility of doing the Sound in a wetsuit. Your site popped on my google search right away. Have you made any additional excursions since the July updates?

    I have!

I’ve made five more trips since then, including one last week where my wife and I explored Carkeek Park’s northern beach run. Very accessible, pristine beds of eel grass and smooth easy swimming. Lots more to report, but I was hoping to get some more photos in my next posts (my buddy with the camera is slow to share pics!)

Then you also may have noticed how hard it is to find good Bar-B-Q up here :D

Or fried ocra for that matter!

Hope to see you out there. For a first-time, I recommend the alkai pipeline reef-rocks. When you put in for the pipe-line trip, there are some rocks between where you will get in and where the condos on stilts are (a development built out into the water). Go to those rocks and it’s a lot like a reef. I spend a whole day there once playing tag with the many sea perch, salmon and steelhead frye, rock fish, and other assorted amazements that drifted by.

Outfit at discount divers with a 7 mil as the water at this location is about 10 degrees colder than some others. This gives it consistent clarity but makes the surfer rental 3/4 suit a bit lame.

Or if you are timid, the Carkeek north run gives you the simple version – it’s like the prairy of the sea and offers very mild currents and almost no traffic.

Let me know if you want me to alert you to our next group outing. I often go with friends and we find a place to eat afterward.

Yup. I recommend Pecos BBQ (on 1st Ave across the street from Starbuck’s Building). A friend of mine is pit master at Carolina Kitchen in Redmond which is also pretty good, albeit more of a dry-rub Carolina style. CK does make fried okra & jalepeno hushpuppies, only place I’ve found so far that does.

    Cheers, JD

Hey this blog has been a great find. I’ve never been much of a water guy growing up, but I’ve decided I want my scuba cert, and snorkeling has been where I’ve started. I’ve been piddling around in the water here and it’s been pretty amazing so far!

Glad to know I’m not the only one out there snorkeling the sound. I figured anyone that invested the $ to get a wetsuit would probably be diving and not snorkeling.

  6. admin Says:

Yeah, I thought about diving – will probably try it some day – but hauling the tanks, regulators, dealing with ear pressures – and then so much more money and much less convenience are involved in diving. i like that I can just zip up and jump in whenever I want, rain or shine.

  7. James Thigpen Says:

Do you go snorkeling alone? If not, how do you find people to go with you? I’ve been at a bit of a loss for finding other people interested in snorkeling the sound.

  8. admin Says:

I always go with a buddy, but I must confess I did go alone once. I’m too cautious by nature to enjoy it though. SO much can happen out there that it’s good to go with company.

To get people to come along, I invite just about everyone I know. I tell em that they can outfit at Discount Divers for around 20$ and swim all day, then I show them some of the cooler pictures and tell them about the neat stuff I’ve seen.

I’ll definitely invite you to come along on our next outing. I’m expecting that as the water cools a bit this fall we are going to have much better visibility than in the summer.

Sounds great! Yeah drop me a line next time you go out. I didn’t know it was so cheap to rent the stuff. I’ll have to pester my friends.

Never remembered to give you a head’s up on any snorkel trips – but I wanted to let you know that if you subscribe to the twitter feed I have set up on the blog, you can now be notified of upcoming swims.

    Enjoy!
